PCB surface mount technology (SMT) assembly is a complex process requiring multiple stages. Below are detailed explanations of each step:

1. Pre-Production Preparation :

Begin by obtaining customer-provided PCB design files, BOM (Bill of Materials), and technical specifications. Then generate engineering documents – including component placement coordinates and stencil design files – to ensure smooth subsequent production.

2. Component Preparation & Inspection:

Procure components according to the BOM and conduct incoming quality inspections. This phase is critical as component quality directly impacts final product performance. Rigorous inspection ensures all parts meet quality standards.

3. SMT Component Placement :

Secure the PCB on the pick-and-place machine's workbench. Using placement coordinate files, precisely mount components onto solder-pasted pads. Machine accuracy and stability are vital here, directly affecting placement quality and efficiency.

4. Reflow Soldering :

After component placement, the PCB undergoes reflow soldering. Controlled heating melts the solder paste, permanently bonding components to the PCB. Precise temperature profiling (typically 230°C–250°C peak) and timing are critical to prevent thermal damage.

5. Quality Inspection & Final Assembly :

Post-soldering inspections include:

Visual examination

Electrical testing (continuity/insulation resistance)

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)
Verify correct component placement, solder joint integrity, and absence of shorts/opens. Finally, perform final assembly per customer requirements (e.g., housing installation, wiring).

The core SMT workflow comprises:
① Pre-production prep → ② Component inspection → ③ SMT placement → ④ Reflow soldering → ⑤ QC & assembly.
Each stage is indispensable to the PCB SMT manufacturing process.
