Advantages of Flexible PCB

Flexibility

‍Due to flexibility, these PCBs are used in curved or foldable electronics.

01

Space-Saving

‍By using Flex PCBs, designers can significantly reduce the overall size of electronic devices.

02

Reduced Weight

‍Flex PCBs are lighter because they use thinner and lighter materials like polyimide, which is crucial for aerospace and wearable technology.

03

Improved Reliability and Durability

‍The ability to withstand mechanical stresses enhances the reliability and longevity of the circuits.

04

Enhanced Thermal Management

Due to their thinness and the use of polyimide, Flex PCBs can withstand high temperatures. Even a Teflon PCB are known to sustain harsh environments.

05

Types of Flexible PCB

Single-Sided Flexible Circuits

The most common and simple flex PCBs on the market. They contain a single conductor layer on a flexible dielectric film, and are only printed on one side. They are the most affordable flex PCBs on the market and are relatively easy to produce. These printed circuits are found in most calculators thanks to their simplicity and low weight.

Double-Sided Flexible Circuits

By printing on both sides of a dielectric film connect with plated through holes, double-sided flex PCBs offer enhanced power-handling capabilities and circuit density. While they are popular for their increased power, they are somewhat more expensive to produce than single-sided flex PCBs.

Multilayer Flexible PCB
High Frequency Flexible PCB

Multi-Layer Flex Circuits

Flexible circuits with three or more layers of conductors. Due to the complexity of their construction, multi-layer flex PCBs are more expensive than their counterparts. They are often used in aerospace and military applications that can justify the cost and capabilities of such a flex circuit.

Rigid-Flex Circuits

A hybrid between standard flex circuits and rigid PCBs, a rigid-flex PCB incorporates a network of rigid circuit boards that typically house components with flexible substrates that connect them together. They are commonly found in commercial electronics such as laptops and smart devices, as well as the military sector that depends on their reliability, strength, and flexibility to ensure consistent performance.

Applications of Flexible PCB

Consumer electronics
Flex PCBs enable the production of foldable smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. It has high durability and flexibility. These foldable gadgets are widely used in today’s world. Because of their flexibility and lightweight construction, they are used highly for wearable electronics. They can be sewn into garments or worn as elastic bands.

Medical Equipment
Applications like Endoscopes use flexible circuits, which allow for compact designs and easy transit through the body’s cavities. Flex PCBs are commonly used to make medical wearables like health monitoring gadgets and smart medical patches.

Automotive sector
Flex PCBs are used in the interior of automotive industrial which includes flexible dashboard displays, sensors in the seat, and numerous other components. By using flex PCBs here will utilise the space effectively. They are also implemented in sensors, control systems, and lighting applications that require flexibility for installation in limited places.

Aerospace and Defence
Flex PCBs are employed in satellite systems where weight, space, and dependability are important factors. The flexibility enables easy integration into small places within the satellite. Flex PCBs are frequently utilized in military equipment, including aircraft and communication systems, due to their ability to endure vibrations, shocks, and severe weather conditions.

Industrial Automation
Flex PCBs can be implemented in a variety of industrial sensors, control systems, and automation applications that require compact design and reliable performance. They are also integrated into robotic systems to provide the flexibility required for the robotic joint movement and congested routing in places which are tight.

Communication Devices
The adaptability of flex PCBs is useful in building conventional antennas and devices for communication. They will provide improved signal reception for the antennas. To achieve sleek designs, Flexible PCBs are used in smartphones as well as other mobile devices.

LED Lights
Flex PCBs are often used in flexible LED strips because they are easily bendable and conformable to various shapes. This is beneficial for both ornamental lighting and architectural applications.

Innovative Displays
TV screens are a lot more curved than often. This is implemented in TVs for the best experience for Cinemas, sports or even web series for the audience. This is achieved by using Flex PCBs in order to occupy the space effectively.

Structure of Flexible PCB
1

Dielectric substrate film

It can be considered the base material of PCB. The prevalent material includes polyimide(PI), characterized by high-temperature resistance.

2

Electric Conductors

These include traces of the circuit, copper foil is used as the surface conductor layers in the production of single/multilayer printed circuit boards.

3

Protective Finish

It is composed of organic film and adhesive. The function of the cover film is to protect the completed flexible circuit conductor part.

4

Adhesive Material

A type of sticky film has different adhesive types and thickness specifications. The sticky film is used for interlayer adhesion and insulation of multilayer boards.

FAQ

Q: What is the maximum temperature for a flex PCB?

A: Generally, polyimide flex PCBs can withstand temperatures ranging from 150°C (302°F) to 260°C (500°F) for short periods without significant degradation. It is important to note that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to material degradation, potentially affecting the circuit's performance and reliability.

Q: What adhesive is used in flex PCB?

A: In a rigid-flex PCB design, the flexible region can use acrylic adhesive, and the rigid region can use epoxy adhesives. Stiffeners: Single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer flex circuits can be stiffened in specific areas by adding localized rigid material called PCB stiffeners.

Q: What information do you need for quick quotations?

A: We should to know the below specifications before quotation: Quantities Required; Material Type, Thickness and Copper Weight; Dimensions; Gold Edge Connectors; Delivery Date; Plating Finish; Number of Layers; Soldermask, Silkscreen; Testing; Gerber Files or Artwork Supplied; Number of Holes and Drill sizes.

Q: What is the radius of Flex PCB?

A: How to Calculate Flex PCB Bend Radius. The minimum bending radius is calculated as a multiple of the final circuit board thickness and the ratio of the desired application (stable or dynamic) and bend radius (r): Ratio = r/h; where r = bending radius, and; h = overall height of the flexible part.

Q: What is the current rating of a flex PCB?

A: The current carrying capacity gets limited by copper thickness. For common flex circuits typical current ratings range from 0.5 to 5A.

Q: What is the minimum trace width for a flex PCB?

A: The minimum trace width for a flex PCB is typically around 0.005 inches (0.127 mm), but it can vary depending on the specific application requirements.

Q: How thick is a flex PCB Coverlay?

A: The required component feature openings are mechanically created using drilling, routing, or laser cutting. Typical coverlay thickness is 0.001" polyimide with 0.001" of adhesive. Thicknesses of 0.0005" & 0.002" are available, but only used as needed to meet specific design requirements.

Q: What different types of file you are comfortable to work with?

A: We normally work with the most common format Gerber files(RS274*format), Protel/DXP customers used.

Q: What's the minimum order?

A: There is no minimum order. No matter you order one or a lot, we are here to help you.

Q: How can I pay?

A: We accept payments by paypal, wire transfer. All of orders should be paied before making, for the samples, we recommend to use Paypal, very quickly and convenient.
